Day by Day

December 5, 2008

Last night I watched the Barbara Walter's Special-10 Most Fascinating People.  Number 10 on her list was Will Smith.  While I agree with this choice, it's not because he is the biggest movie star of all-time.  It's because he seems to genuinely strive to be a successful human being, as well.

More than anything, I was struck by his stance on marriage.  He talked about his first failed marriage and current marriage.  He said that he and his wife believe that divorce is just not an option.  He said being married is absolutely the hardest thing you will ever do in your life.  (Boy, can I second that emotion!)  But he also said that if you go into it thinking you can just get a divorce when things get rough, everyone would just get divorced.

This may seem obvious to some people but with the current divorce rate in the US being 50%, maybe it isn't.

I have spent most of my adult life believing that I would never get married.  It was a very well known fact amongst my friends and family.  I just didn't see the point, especially when I saw so few examples of happy ones.  My plan was to be a diehard single girl for life!  But as my favorite Deepak Chopra says, if you want to make God laugh...tell him your plans!  My outlook on so many things in life changed on September 30, 2003.

My husband and I have been married for a little over two years.  We, like every couple, have our good days and bad. (In fact, today started out as a not-so-good one. LOL!)

But our worse-ever days can never out number our good ones.  And I can't imagine ANY day without him.

If you are married or in a committed relationship, remember this.  Think about your life before that person was in it.  If your days are so much sweeter than they were before...don't let go.

A New Day

November 4, 2008

Today is an extraordinary day for the entire country. I have been an Obama supporter from very early on. I have never had any doubt in my heart that he would win. And as the electorial vote is currently 207-95...I still don't.

But what makes today extra special for me is my dad, Kent Houslin.

My dad is the smartest man I know, literally. He is well read and informed about everything! Friends and family will attest to the fact that not a day goes by without my dad sending various info via email to us. The subjects run the gamut. Everything from articles on finance to conspiracy theories to why McCain is not really a US citizen (born in the Panama Canal)!

But my dad was not a citizen of this country. He has been a legal resident since migrating from Jamaica in 1965. As a legal resident you do not have the right to vote (he does has a green card, so you republicans don't have to call the INS on him!). ;)

But after the debacle of the Bush administration, my dad decided to make a change. After 43 years in this country, he applied for his U.S. Citizenship. Why? So he could vote in this historic election!

Today, along with millions and millions of other Americans, my father cast his vote for the very first time.

I am so proud of my little dad (as I call him). And I am so overjoyed that my whole family could experience this unbelievably important day together.
